Richard, The load.... I dont know how it will come out, but ive got an old AMT D8 bomb that am researching a slice and dice to make it at least the size of an old D7 17a with winch and angle blade...dose anyone know what the designater "D7N" that Hyster put on the logging winches for these cats meant? Ross, Here is a option, i would use it a tool to measure from for making a detailed model. NZG made both this military version & a civilian version. You might also try Evil-bay. www.constructionscalemodels.com/productdetail.aspx?recid=%2012429Ap40

the d7n on the hyster is hysters model number generally meant will work with d7 sized dozers, as an example my terex 8230 had a hyster w89.

Ross did a little quick research on the allied winch site {used to be hyster} and the winches are still numbered this way. since a 17a 7 was direct drive youll have two contol handles for the winch as well. way before they put hydraulic conrtols in the winch itself. hope that helps some sounds like neat project.

here is a pic of the start of my lowbed, due to lack of resources my axle setup may be a bit weird…the old suspension that was in the AMT lowbed parts bag will require a longer tail and im not quite sure how it all went together as 30 something years ago I chopped it up and made it a 2 axle trailer so probably didn’t put it together right anyway….SO, ive taken the suspension from the revel snapkit and replaced the rear ends with a square tube axle…not sure how to attach the air breaks yet… All the research I did came up with one similar Page trailer but it was 8’6” wide? Im just assuming my dads was only 8foot…. Im getting much better at cutting strait strips of the styrene You can also see my reshaped 358 hood on my rebuild frame.

I did some asking around a long time ago about the numbering system on the Hyster winch and was told by a lot of loggers and friends who worked with them that; when Hyster was hot and heavy into building winches they were building for several different Companies at the time I.E. Cat, Allis, Cletrak and so forth. So they came up with a number which would indicate which unit was for what type crawler. D8n Indicated use on a D8 size Cat. Anything with an AC number was for a Allis Chalmers unit and so forth. This was back when all crawler manufacturers had their own standards for building and mounting different type of equipment. Now days everything is pretty much standardized to where all equipment and and the winches will interchange. Which is why you see, a D numbered winch on almost all equipment models from Terex to Allis Chalmers. I realize there may be a more logical explanation for it but being around logging darn near all my life and seeing the different numbers used by Hyster to identify their winches, And hearing the old timers explanation it all seems logical.
The same with Logging archs Wheeled and Tracked models. A logging arch which is made for a Cletrak Cannot be used by a Cat and one for a Cat cannot be used on a Cletrak Because of the way the crawlers are built. When Cletrak went out of business, all those Archs which were at the factory had to be rebuilt to be used on other crawlers.
An interesting note is that Hyster was not the First Company to build winches for crawler units. Pacific Car and foundry which is now known as PACCAR was actually the first to start building them along with Latournue the latter being the one who built all the attachments for Cats when the two were in partnership before the great split. PACCAR was contracted to Cletrak to build attachments for them as well as other units.
I hope this helps out. I may be wrong but them those old timers I knew in the logging industry could pick up a two inch chunk of hay wire and tell you who made by the way it was put together.

Did you ever try to remove that )&()*&_)_ military paint?!!! We had a 1960's Hough H-55 loader, ex-army, gave up trying to remove the OD green, ended up with 4 coats of red oxide primer & 4 coats of Hitachi orange, then let it sit & bake in the sun for 2 weeks. Glad it was sold off soon after.....Replaced it with a Cat 988 Ap40

With Asia astern and 4500 mines of Pacific to cross im back… Paint is much easier with the sweet lil airbrush my sister gave me, you can see my lame attempt at aluminum foiling my grill, but after hacking it up to narrow it this was easiest. Still having some issues the hood closing properly due to radiator and the hood hinges as I didn’t account for them what I shrunk the radiator. Dads early Petes had these mini fuel tanks, so I shrunk them too. Trying to find something small and metallic looking for door handles… the old glue bomb cab took a lot of filler and primer coats to close the 14 holes in the roof and shrunk the back window. Also getting the Page lowboy framed up, a lot of angle brackets to go Attachments:

Ross, The more i look at the trailer scratch build the more i like it. Classic arched neck, and by using the "I" beams for the cross members over the channels you could easily rate the load capacity of the trailer higher. Say 45 - 50 ton range, as compared to the old AMT tri-axle perimeter frame which is barely a 30 ton. Really looking forward to seeing the whole rig completed.
