Photo in a book on Santa Fe freight cars inspired this simple project, it showed a 65' mill gondola loaded with creosoted pilings which were longer than the car requiring an "idler" flat car be coupled to it. as I model Canadian National and CN had similar cars I decided to make my version Canadian. Mill gondolas have drop down ends for long loads like this, Athearn makes a nice die cast 65' mill gondola. One drop end cut out using razor saw/motor tool/files and paint touched up. Vertical poles to secure load are round toothpicks cut to length, stained and glued in place. Load itself is skewer sticks cut to 70' - 75' lengths, stained with a mix of brown and black to simulate creosote. Single strand of fine copper wire (taken from stranded hook up wire) used for tie wire across vertical poles. Idler flat is Micro-Trains car with couplers body mounted, trucks painted mineral red to match carbody. Both cars have had wheelsets replaced with metal ones.

That is excellent. It is hard to believe it is such a small scale.
