I was sitting around the other day thinking about the sixties and listening to Sirius Sat and they played a song by Scott McKenzie, San Francisco, Wear some Flowers in Your Hair. I did spend some time in The Bay area back then and took part in the Music and Happenings. The art work was what I was most interested in and I took the time to learn from some of the best artists on the West Coast and very little known artist at the time who would become a Art magistrate back in the New York and Eastern area Named Peter Maxx. From my area of Humboldt County there was Hobart Brown of Ferndale, now known as Victorian Village, down below Eureka.
Another was a guy who went buy the name of the great Razzoolie, the King of Hearts, from Zennia, California down around Garberville. Razzoolie and Hobart Brown started what was to become the world wide renown Kinetic Races, of Humboldt County.
Well I had painted a lot of VEE WEES and EARLY AMERICAN WINNEBAGO'S (Hippie school buses) as an artist of the time, but my biggest dream was to take a diesel rig and design a paint theme around the era and the music. I never got the chance because of other things which started happening fast around me, but the other day I said to myself, Self, take a model truck rig and build a small rep of the era.
Below are the results of that spurt of Modeling Madness. I took the old AMT Turn piker model, which I had that was missing a few parts, and with brush in hand plus a few toothpicks and a magnifying lamp, began to paint. The form I used is what we call layer scening and no matter which way you look at the rig the painting all falls together as one, Over, Under, Sideways and Down. (borrowed that from the Rock Group the Yardbirds). The painting starts out as one and when it is down, a totally different painting is done over top of it. In this case, Planets, Bubbles, stars and what have you. Once this was done I went and added the Magical Mystery Tour (Borrowed from the Beatles) painting to finish it off. Since the paint I used was a combination of Flats and glosses I then went in with Tamiya transparent paints and brightened all the paints out and gave them a different texture and look.
Well below is results of the painting. I will eventually be building a portable mobile stage and equipment pup for this unit when finished along with a generator on the frame for stage power.
For now the rig is just sitting together for show and has to be finished by adding interier and the outer fittings. As there was now glass for the windows I will have to make them.
Oh yeah, those are clouds painted on the blue Frame.
The rig has the air of somebody back then had done everything with a brush because a lot of the newer items used in Art work wasn't on the market yet. But you get the idea.
Who said models can't have fun!!!
