I've managed to get our new computer to do some of the things I want it to do. I was able to download my camera, so here are some updates on the Lombard's track system. I tried my hand at resin casting, with mixed results. the gears are cast from a mold I made of the master I built. Its an art I haven't come close to mastering, but with enough weathering I think they will be OK. The undercarriage parts are built from evergreen. This is a mock up of the undercarriage From the original train frame, I cut the front sections off to create the mounts for the tracks. Its the triangular chunk in the middle The almost finished track mounts. The cross bracing goes under the ash pan while the axles mount to the engine frame at the firebox. Things are still quite rough yet. need to do a lot more detailing. It is taking much longer than I figured it would to do this project. But it is fun doing all the imagineering Thanks Carl

this project is not progressing as fast as I thought it would. I have a model club meeting tomorrow so I've been working on the steam cylinders and valve gear. I need something for "Show-N-Tell" Anyway I mocked things up to show some progress. The Lombard has a gearbox/differential mounted midships under the boiler. I butted final drive castings from the D-8 to form the gearbox casing. made up some pillow blocks and mounted it under the boiler. The white shaft will be the input shaft. output goes to a chain drive. This is the right side steam engine. The cylinders are scratch built. The valve train has parts from The General plus parts box pieces including brake slack adjusters, car hood hinges. and wheel rims. It is not intended to be accurate just look busy enough to be right to the unknowing eye. Left side undercarriage stuck in place. The mounting boxing is a model car engine blower. Again it looks close enough to pass off to the unsuspecting viewer. This is as far as I've gone to date. Thanks Carl

A few more in progress pics: Most of the front end is now complete. The steam engine part is done. Most of the parts are scratch built. the rods were salvaged from the General. I still have a bit more to do with the steering gear. I've made the rear platform from wooden planking( model ship supplies) as well as the front wall of the cab. The roof is from the General kit. The woodbox is made from sheet styrene. The side walls will also be done in wood planks. The track sprockets were cast from a master that I made. not a great effort but I'm hoping to weather out most of the visible flaws with snow I still haven't solved the problem of the tracks or final drive chains yet. some longer shots Thanks for looking Carl

This is going to be one magnificent model when it is completed. A museum piece in its own right.

This is just a quick update on the project. I managed to put together a cab for the Lombard. It is made from model ship planking. I used the roof from the General kit. The cab sizing is made to fit that roof. I still have several fittings and other hardware to install on the cab. I also started the orthopedic surgery necessary to create the helmsman. An overhead shot. The box at the rear is to hold firewood for the boiler. All those white spots on the boiler are sanding residue that seems to have a static cling attraction for black things. And finally a shot of the boiler head. Thanks Carl

Carl,
This coming along great. On the chain drive, you might want to get a hold of am old Monogram bulldog mack and use the chain drive unit out of the kit. it is basically the same as the one used on the lumbard in looks.
