So I decided to attempt a recreation of one of my Dads trucks from the 60’s. Procrastination led me to buying the kw900 snap kit at Wal-Mart the day before going to sea. I had the Peerless trailer and wasn’t paying attention and ended up with a 1/20th scale truck (thus the snap kit) I haven’t built a plastic model in 30 years so was surprised when I opened the box (now 500 miles off the Oregon coast bound for the Aleutians) to find the cab/sleeper to be one piece . At this point I figured what the heck and sliced off the sleeper figuring to use the back of the sleeper for the new cab back. At this point I opened the log trailer and googled tips on building it and ended up here THANK YOU MUELSKINNER! In Williams trailer rebuild thread. First pic you can see the hacked up cab and sheet plastic new reach and dolly piece. I also at this point found spymikes thread where he did the same slice job to the KW900snap. Attachments:

Ive learned more about logging trucks and what my Dad had in the last week than Ive ever known. From studying many Pictures I figured I could modify what I have to look close to a 62 wide nose (after looking at the Illini conversion kit…wish I had one) Ive lengthened the hood and added the lower aft fendering, modified the hood ridge by scraping/sanding, filled in where the left side air cleaner was and moved the headlights up and aft Attachments:

I had to stretch the frame a bit in front of the cab for the longer nose, being un-prepared all I have for filler is a tube of plastic wood filler and luckily a can of rust-oleum sandable primer…Im a bit disappointed in the quality of the snapkits frame, but I figure this truck will be a learning project Attachments:

Sorry about the little attached pictures. Due to satellite fed internet out of England it is really slow and we have the infamous Barracuda web filter that blocks me from photobucket...a few more coats of primer and a lot more sanding to go. Attachments:

An ambitious project. Looks like you're off to a good start.

Doing a great job. My favorite trucks are the kenworths from the 50's to the earily 60's. Hope you can keep posting your updates would love to keep following your progress. Dave

Ross, great work so far, especially since you can only work with what you have. Maybe find a hobby shop in Asia for supplies? That is if you ever get off the ship.

I really like the "look" of Kenworth conventionals of that era too. Seeing this project, you've provided inspiration for something similar in 1/25.

Thanks Gents, Rick, I hope to run ashore in Kobe Japan and find a hobby shop and get a few better tools and hopefully some paint, couldnt find the right colors in proper testers spray so bought some at a hardware store...takes days to dry?

Haven’t done much in the past few days, in and out of both Yokohama and Osaka Bay. I little more sanding/filling and a first fitting of new battery box. Hit the jackpot and stumbled into a pretty sweet hobby shop in a mall in Kobe, 12870 yen worth of paint, tools, cutting mat, evergreen material and even a can clear flat spray WOOHOO. Attachments:

That hood looks fantastic! Are you going to oldify (is that even a word?) the cab?

There is a six story Tamiya store in Osaka if you get the time. Has all of their models used in the ads on display.
