Though I build Models of the Industry and worked in it, There was a time I tried my hand at Commercial Art and was asked to do a mural on one of our local Loggers Taverns here in Coos County. The Little off Tavern which is now long gone, was the hang out for the logging crews in my area for many years and when I was asked to do the mural I was told it had to reflect the life of the logging industry and the loggers themselves. I borrowed a chair from inside and went out in the parking lot and sat drinking a brew and came up with the following design.
The front of the Tavern after completion. Those are real saws and Dogs hanging in the middle around the sign. The lady in the glasses is my wife Ragecajun5(Marlyne).
Timber fallers swinging axes and using Misery whips
Rigger slinger and Lokie.
Closeup of the lokie under steam.
Steam donkey working the skid down in the hole.
Sawmill and tramp area for shipping lumber. A lumber schooner can be seen in the background through the steam and smoke of the mill.
This isn't a good photo but the front door of the Tavern was painted as an old rustic logging office with and old retired logger sitting on the porch. Never thought I would be painting a self portrait when I did this.
The corner beside the office door, showing the backside of the office and the storage shed.
All in all it took about six months to complete from layout wall sketching to painting using Brush, Air Brush and rattle can. Even though it was done back in the early eighties and has since been razed, I still meet people who remember it and when I show them the pictures they kind of get a tear in their eye. Well who wouldn't, as it was a loggers meeting place and just plain fun after a day of throwing rigging. Hope you like the Photos.
