I'm not much on highway rigs unless they haul lumber or such related item, but I have always held a place for the Auto Carriers which ply the interstate. Ever since I was a youngin' growing up in West Virginia and Utah until moving to the west coast way back when, I was amazed at the Auto Hauler concept not just as a truck but you could actually get a live preview of the new Detroit releases before they hit the lot.
Instead of building one of the well known carriers, I decided to design my own using an ERTL International (Parts Kit), A revell Auto Carrier, and Evergreen plastic. I had a picture which I took of an auto carrier with a low slung fifth and used it to guide me in the project. Here is what I came up with so far.
the racks are all made from Evergreen mounted on the ERTL international. I used the 4300 as is and added a K-Whooper sleeper which Loghauler70 had extra. I also used the left over tanks from the lone star build plus the rear wheels. I also opted for a roll door box on both sides of the unit. The photos show the rig just sitting together.
The low slung fifth which is off a ford Louisville hauler, on its new mount.
detailed view of the bottom deck showing the headache rack built into the carrier body. The four small black items on the headache rack are rubber bumpers to keep the autos from being thrown forward into the headache rack causing damage to both.
Front view showing the rack over hang on the cab.
This might prove to be a worth while project as a change from what I normally build. Once the tractor is completed I will begin to convert the Revell Auto Carrier over to a low slung to fit the rig.
