To the questions about logging truck stingers, I went through my pictures and found some which might help clear up the question.
The square end stinger as seen on these rigs is just an extension of the frame about five feet or so back from the last axle in the rear, to accommodate the pintal hook for the trailer.
Also note the safety chains for the trailer.
The tapering stinger. Also note the emergency release jammer inside the frame attached to the main pintal. This is controlled from the cab of the truck. In case of an emergency, the driver can hit the release valve button and thus jettison the trailer and load if needed. It has saved many a life in an emergency situation.
The removable and adjustable stinger. This unit was designed to be adjustable and allow more swing to the trailer and to also allow for better following of the trailer to the truck in the turning attitude. The last photo is of the old R unit owned by Gross Logging at Catching Creek which we used as a Logging Truck as well as an equipment hauler. The picture shows the stinger removed as the rig is equipped with the fifth wheel. It would normally be installed if the Fifth wheel was removed and the Bunks were installed, so the trailer could be attached. Old Blue the K Whopper was a Dump most of the time but if needed she could have her box taken of and a stinger added to her with bunks to become a logging truck.
