Rick, that is small comapred to what alot of them on the west coast used to be in days gone by. Some Redwood logs had to be split and hauled on two different rigs to get em to the mill.

Rick, that is small comapred to what alot of them on the west coast used to be in days gone by. Some Redwood logs had to be split and hauled on two different rigs to get em to the mill. UMM, wow, how does one split a log that big? ? Ap40 They have a team of stump monkeys go in and bore a holle down the middle of the log and then they put a little stumping powder inside ans seal the holes. They then set it off. What you end up with is transportable cants. Some logging units used a cat with a bow type ram splitter rigged to the front where as the log was put agaist a rock bluff and the cat wouild drive the ram into the front end of the log and apply enough prssure to it to crack and split the log down the middle. I know of one unit in California over by Mount Shasta which used a pavement breaker mounted on an excavator to slit logs. But most logging units relied on the stump monkeys. Now days with only the cutting of second and third growth instead of old growth, you very seldom see any of the above in the woods anymore. William
