This could probably be in 3 or 4 different catagories but really fits in all. For many years, the major manufactures of trucks offered a glider kit. They came in just about any configuration you could choose but most came as a cab and frame with a front axle and then the owner supplied the rest. Many were built up from older trucks, some wrecked or just plain worn out but the parts were used to build these kit trucks. Mack bogie rears come to mind as it seemed as if a lot of them were used in the northwest. Many a logger re-built his fleet this way as did many over the road boys. So...................... I built this model a year or so ago.................... Mike Hosted on FotkiThe cab and hood. Hosted on FotkiComplete Glider Kit. I remember these out Oregon way. White, Paccar, and a lot of Subsidiary companies would build these from salvagable turn ins or Trade ins and re offer them at a resonable price to the Consummer. Youd be surprized how many Logging trucks came from the factory this way. Great model to illustrate the glider.

In the 70's everyone listed glider kits in the their product line. I did a few on the R model Mack chassis. We ordered them in with the 235 hp to 350 hp motors & Mack 12 speed gearboxes.
the rears & bodies were all take offs from rigs that were either to far gone to run down the road, or wrecks.

I used to see these sitting at dealerships but I was to young to understand the concept.

I believe, in a sense that they ae offering them again. Probably not like the old days but there is so much confusion over truck manufacturing and power plant people and new laws that a couple have come out with gliders again but the wait list is or was several months. Mike
