A beautiful shot of my old neck of the woods. If I didn't know any better I would say that is the Tower Tree coming up Crescent City hill towards Klamath. You can barley make out the ocean in the back ground. Great picture and comparison.

Okay guys I got the exact location of the picture after going through some old photos my dad had. Its on the Ave of the giants down Prarie creek drive at the elk farm, just before you get to Orick, California. That tree has taken a lot of scrapes and hits in its time as you can see by the piece of bark hanging out over the nose of the rig. Another place you can see trees like this only on a larger scale is richardson Grove down below Philipsville, California. When 101 was built they chose to leave the trees intact when they could and built the road between them and paved right up to the stump. Back then it was a good idea as the cars were smaller and the trucks not so massive as now days. when it wa s found that two rigs could be wedged between the trees they decided to by pass the massive groves and reroute traffic for safer routes. The old highways were left intact and they classed it as the scenic routes of hwy 101 The Redwood Highway and redesignated it Avenue of the Giants. If you ever get out to this area of the West Coast, I would recomemnd you drive thye old highway as you can reallly get up close to these trees and see just how massive they are.
Another great drive is the truckee area between Sacramento, Ca. and Reno, Nev which goes in the area of the Sequoia Redwwod area of the seirra nevada range. Those redwood make the coastals look like tooth picks in comparison. I've lived in the redwood areas of California since 1960 and they still never cease to amaze me when I am around them.

I never traveled the old road but was told years ago that you could see all the marks on the trees from the trucks rubbing on them. Mike
