This one has been in the "on again/off again" rotation for a while, currently it is "on again", 1980's K100 heavy spec tractor based on a 1:1 truck that was originally on with the Imperial Oil (Esso) fleet delivering to gas stations throughout southern Ontario. It is still around, I saw photos on Hank's Truck Forum and started this project when Round 2 reissued the K123 kit. In hindsight I would have been better off flat topping an Aerodyne as I ended up using a lot of Aerodyne parts (from a partially built kit I bought) anyway. Cab was shortened to match the small sleeper BBC: Rear suspension is 72" Hendrickson from Plaskit: Kit brake backing plates & slack adjusters used with Plaskit spring brake chambers:

Fifth wheel plate portion taken from snap kit W900 Aerodyne frame and center portion removed. I used this because the slider track matched the real truck more closely than AMT kit part. Styrene angle used to replicate mounting brackets to frame: Front hub step made from styrene strip and aluminum mesh:

Aerodyne cab hinges adapted (See? I should have just started with an Aerodyne kit! ), 1/16" styrene rod across frame rails provides pivot point: Micro-Mark decal rivets, O scale size, used to replace rivets lost when filling/sanding seam where cab was shortened. Styrene half round .040 used to make window gaskets, saw that tip in a recent Scale Auto Enthusiast in the "Truck Stop" column by Evan Hermel: Another distinctive feature of this truck is the Farr air cleaner mounted behind cab, styrene used to construct this along with mounting brackets, etched brass mesh used for front of filter element. This is where the project is at today:

From the calibre of your other builds I see another starting out here. Will be watching this one.

Work of art, especially happy to see someone correcting the rear of the kit KW frame. Great attention to detail. Like the step rings on the front wheels.
Thanks for sharing, and making us drool.

Thanks guys! A bit more accomplished on chassis this evening, fitting up fuel tanks and air dryer installed: Closer view of air dryer. Brass tube used for shocks (1/8" for main shock body, 3/32" for lower portion and mounting eyes) on 1/16" styrene rod mounts. Sounds like a lot of work, actually I find it easier to solder mounting eyes on shock body and assemble onto model as upper/lower halves can telescope making setting exact length easy. And there are no sink marks/parting lines/ejector pin marks/flash/all of the above to clean up!

brass & copper, is so much easier to work with than styrene. Nice to see other modelers choosing the best material for the job over being stuck on just one.
Super clean details, great work so far. Did you scratch the air dryer?

Thanks, yes some materials are better suited to represent 1:1 items than others, another example is aluminum tube for stacks as it can be polished to a "chrome" shine. Air dryer was scratched (after some head scratching, surprisingly turned out to be fairly easy to construct), mostly styrene with shim brass mounting strap, size approximated from reference photo.

Cab mounts, the front are great, from the old areodyne kit, now i am studying the rear. So much better to rest on the interior bucket than the cab shell.......
