Nice pics. The Autocar was Butane powered? Well,l wouldn't you know. Experimenting with alternative fuels back in the 1950s. Before Diesel took over, there was Gasoline & Butane engines offered by Waukesha, Hercules, Buda, Hall-Scott and Continental. There were a few odd ball offerings from LeRoi & Murphy, but these mostly saw service in construction equipment such as big compressors & Northwest shovels. Ap40

In the '50's KW built a model with a gas turbine engine and then CF ran a few of them in their Frieghtliner COE's from Seattle to Vancouver, B.C. Very inovative. Mike in the same time frame, just about all of the major manufactures played with the gas turbine idea. The Mack Museum has a Cruiseliner with a GT-404 turbine in it, still operational. both Ford & GMC stuck them in prototypes & trade show trucks as well as a few road test vehicles. I read once that Ford stuck one in a C-900 with the exhaust pointing down, at idle it burned holes in the asphalt. The super high exhaust temps combined with the need for essentially a A&P mechanic to keep them running put the end to the idea. Ap40

Like Euclid, KW tried to log with a single drive axle...Tires we just not up to the task, tandem axles won out. Ap40 Attachments:

Great bunch of photos. Especially the Mt. Pierce Autocar from Fortuna Ca. Hampton kept those rigs at Fairhurst Lumber Company lot in Fortuna, Ca. and hauled out of the Bear River, Petrolia area of Humboldt County as well as fort Bragg and Shelter Cove area.. The color on them were main blue over all and white. with red logos.
Old John Rossi out of Fort Bragg which the dual drive chainer KW belonged to was one of the last big holder ons when logging began to fail in Northern California, by hauling from the Fort Bragg area north to Pacific Lumber Company in Scotia via the off road express lines in the Eel River and Russian river areas. The rigs were Orange with blue stripes and door logos. They remained that color right up to the end.
