Have you ever had one of those days where you just want to glue plastic & build something quick? I did a few weeks ago, what WAS going to be a relatively simple curbside long logger model has become a bit more involved. This happens to me all the time, can't seem to get past "oh that is wrong or this needs some detail". It will still be a curbside, as I am committed to the cab & hood, but the rest has become so much more. Here are a few photos, so far. started with the re-issue AMT Western Star for the donor chassis............. Ap40

Nice work so far. When we were kids if you were lucky enough to have a model you would never think of changing anything in fear that you would screw it up.Everything was out of the box.Lou Kroack and Phil Jensen were the first guys I saw mixing up kits and man oh man look out,we never looked back.Think about the last time you build a kit straight from the box.

OK, so with the reissued Western Star, Diamond Reo & Road Boss kits as well as the Autocar kits, all of the cabs have one GLARING flaw. The front windshield weather strip / molding is so bad. I keep in mind that those molds were created in the 1970's all by manual computation & tool making. With that in mind the results are not nearly as crisp & accurate as the Italeri Western Star front window opening & weather striping. We need to keep in mind that the old AMT kits are using the original Autocar Drivers cab / Big 4 Corporate cab. Many of us remember the Big 4, Diamond Reo, White, Western Star & Autocar all together of sorts. The Italeri W.S. 4900 cab is not only in 1/24, but is correct for the last version as manufactured by W.S. named the "Heritage cab" Here is a photo of a glue bomb Western Star cab showing the horrible front window weather seal & trim. Here is a shot of the Italeri WS "Heritage cab" window seal & trim. Here is the cab for this build, reworked to the correct shape & profile. Just a bit more finish sanding to go, then off for paint. All of the out cab appointments are mounted using .030" brass pins. More on this to follow Ap40

Next set I have the cab & interior sitting on the chassis, lower skirts are on the cab & will have rivet detail added next. 2 shots sowing the Luberfiner on the drive side & a Farr 2 stage oil bath off highway air cleaner, both of which are held in place by the brass pins. Ap40

Last bit for tonight (1:06 AM for me)will be the tires & wheels. As a part of this "quick" build, I wanted to utilize the kits Uniroyal 11 x 22 tires for both the truck & spares will be added to the trailer later. For the wheels I cast these 22" inner & outer 2 hole wheels. Real pain in the backside to make. I reworked the kits brake drums & cast 4 Eaton drive hubs in resin, the chucked each one in the lathe & drilled a center hole on the back face. Then that hole was drilled out to match the .062" metal axles in the kit. The hubs were glued on center to the drums, then the axles were shortened by .200". since none of my wheels roll, the axles were pressed in & the drums glued to the kits plastic axle ends. I then took the kit tires & spun them on the lathe, by use of a mandrel that holds each one. each tire was "sanded" with different grits of scotch-brite, plus a 220 grit sanding twig to take the sharp corner off where the tread meets the side wall detail. 2 photos of the results. More to come Ap40

Next i will get into the Peerless trailer. I followed the how to by Muleskinner, with a few exceptions. Seems when i was all set to go glue crazy i did not have either of the 2 sizes of square tubing for correcting the reach & reach tube on the trailer. So instead i fabricated both from .040" Evergreen sheet. I never liked the puny Peerless kit ring hitch & pintle hitch arrangements. So new ones were found & cast in resin. the ring hitch from an original ERTL Peerless logger kit & a reworked pintle hitch receiver from a old out of production Italeri parts pack. Photos will have to wait till tomorrow.
More to come

Ahh my bolt heads, years ago, at lest 15 or so, i patterned up a small set of bolt heads that are raised on pegs of .030" rod. from the little plate, I cast 8, glued them together to form a bigger sheet & cast them for myself. These days with Plastruct offering solid hex rod in styrene, it is faster & easier to work with than the resin. Ap40
